、 premiumisation become the mantra of the spirits industry.Almost every brand owners value strategy has been dictated by a trend line that only climbs and a consumer base that only wants two things better and less. This approach hasnt just been wishful speculation, consumers have been steadily developi
、ng more expensive tastes,a trend that was accelerated rapidly by the Covid pandemic. That trend has now slowed consumers are still drinking less but, with current widespread economic pressures, now appear to be trading down.IWSR data shows volume of core premium spirits declined 3%in 2023 while the sup
、er-premium-and-above price tiers showed no growth. But what about rum?Its largely a category that has banked on premiumisation more than most and 12 months ago pundits were hailing that the dominant era of the premium and above segment was just beginning with the IWSR expecting growth to continue at
、4%CAGR until 2027.On the whole, the optimism has not been entirely without merit but deceleration of premiumisation is apparent. The IWSR reports that the total rum market grew by 1%CAGR between 2018 and 2023 and is expected to continue at the same pace until 2028.The premium and above sector outpaced
、 the entire category, growing by 9%between 2018 and 2023,and is expected to continue to do so,growing by 3%CAGR between 2023 and 2028,albeit at a lower rate than was forecast last year and far below recent performances.“As you can see from the data,premium-and-above rum has grown significantly faster
、 than standard-and-below over the past five years,”says Guy Wolfe, head of status spirits insights at the IWSR.“While growth at the higher end will be more modest over the forecast period,it will still outperform the lower end of the market.Overall, while premium-and-above rum is not expected to grow
、at the same rates as previously, this remains the most interesting and dynamic part of the rum market.”As category growth decelerates across all price segments, being able to cater to as wide a range of the market as possible makes increasingly good sense. In the short term, brand owners and producers m

、base.“Our flagship Havana Club Aejo 7 Aos drives the continued premiumisation of the category and has led to a growing interest in quality aged rums,”claims Havana Club International chief executive Christian Barr.“This accessible premium offering is a powerful example of how premiumisation fuels gr
、owth, resulting in a notable 8%increase of our value growth in the 2024 fiscal year.“As global premiumisation becomes an embedded consumer behaviour, drinkers are trading up as standard to premium and premium-plus expressions, which is driving the value proposition accordingly premium has shifted from
、a luxury to a norm, where consumers are willing to invest in products that resonate with their values.”And at the very pointy end of the value tree, while plenty of fine and rare bottlings command a hefty price tag,rum has always struggled a bit to be viewed in the same way as traditional big hitters
、such as Scotch and cognac.“Status data shows that rum still only accounts for a very small proportion(1%)of total luxury spirits selling for$100+per bottle,”says Wolfe.“But the category grew by 10%in value between 2022 and 2023,aided by ongoing innovation.“New releases accounted for around a third o
、f total status rum value in 2023.While this was a slowdown versus previous years, this largely reflects a broader deceleration across luxury spirits as a whole.”Its at that very top end where the rum category saw any double-digit growth between 2022 and 2023.While admittedly the category is starting
、from a relatively small base,it is perhaps an indication that future analysis will espouse how whisky, cognac and rum became the collectors Big Three. In the meantime,it seems rums depth of high-quality trade-up bottlings may be the tonic the category needs to navigate turbulent markets, but total dedi
