1、Netherlands plant-based foods retail market insights 2021 to 2023 with initial insights into the 2024 market Executive Summary This report shows the trends in retail sales of six plant-based product categories(meat,milk and drinks,cheese,yoghurt,dessert and cream)in the Netherlands between 2021 and
2、2023,based on data from Circana.It also presents initial insights into how the 2024 market is developing.The Dutch retail market for plant-based food was valued at 309 million in 2023.The total annual sales value of plant-based foods in the Netherlands grew by 1.8%between 2021 and 2023.Total unit sa
3、les of plant-based foods 1 in the Netherlands shrank by 1%between 2021 and 2023.After strong growth in previous years,this report finds signs of a slowdown amid price rises.While the value of sales increased between 2022 and 2023 in three plant-based categories,only plant-based cheese and cream cont
4、inue to grow in terms of both value and number of units sold.Data for the early part of 2024 suggests that there is a slight rebound in average weekly sales volume,following a dip from 2022 to 2023.1 Since unit sales data was not available for plant-based meat,the total unit sales figure is based on

22、ghurt,dessert and cream)increased by 1.8%between 2021 and 2023,reaching 309 million in 2023.The increase between 2022 and 2023 was 1.1%.Across the five categories for which unit sales data is available(all but meat),unit sales peaked in 2022 at 88 million units before falling 2.9%to 86 million units

27、 six categories.The plant-based milk and drinks category came in second place,at 32%of the market.There is no clear relationship between the size of each category and its rate of growth in sales value between 2022 and 2023:the two fastest-growing categories are cream(a small,emerging category with 8
28、.6%growth)and milk and drinks(a large,established category with 8.2%growth).Note that the rate of growth in sales value does not always directly represent the change in demand,due to the effects of price inflation.See each category section,below,for trends in unit sales and volume sales,which give a

30、rsions of that product category is milk and drinks,where plant-based products accounted for 9.8%of retail sales value in 2023.Plant-based yoghurt and meat also account for reasonably large percentages of their overall markets,at 7.7%and 5.8%respectively.For details of market share on the basis of vo

32、based foods The graph to the right shows the percentage change in volume sales (kg or litres)for three plant-based categories and their animal-based equivalents:meat,milk and yoghurt.Plant-based sales volume declined more between 2022 and 2023 than the animal-based equivalents.For example,while plan
33、t-based meat sales declined by 7.3%,animal-based meat declined by only 2.2%.This pattern may be explained by the high inflation in 2022-2023,which likely influenced the spending power of consumers and their decisions to buy plant-based foods,which are generally more expensive than their animal-based
34、 equivalents.For example,in 2023,plant-based meat was 38%more expensive than animal-based meat.Inflation in the broader European economy has gone through periods of being high in 2022 and 2023,most likely impacting the spending power of consumers and making price a more important factor in spending

36、 in the Netherlands decreased by 6.5%to 144 million.Over the same time period,sales volume declined by 12.5%to 10.8 million kg.Data on unit sales is not available for this category.The plant-based meat category includes meat analogues,which attempt to mimic the taste and texture of meat,such as plan
37、t-based burgers and meatballs.It does not include tofu or tempeh.For comparison,sales of tofu and tempeh together rose 6.3%between 2021 and 2023,reaching 9.6 million in 2023.The relatively strong performance of tofu and tempeh could be explained by their average price,which at 5.85 per kg in 2023 wa
38、s less than half of the average price of plant-based meat (13.30 per kg)and is also notably lower than the average price of pre-packaged animal-based meat(9.63).GFI EUROPE /Netherlands:Plant-Based Foods Retail Market Report(2021-2023)13 Partial year data for 2024(from 1 January until 21 April)indica
39、tes a slight rebound in weekly average sales volume,which was 2.4%higher than in 2023,while weekly average sales value was 1.6%lower than in 2023.The discrepancy between sales value and sales volume can be explained by a fall in the average price per kg of plant-based meat,which may have encouraged
40、more sales by volume.Note that since the time periods being compared are not the same,the 2024 figures could be influenced by an uneven distribution of sales throughout the year.Product format breakdown In 2023,the best-selling type of plant-based meat was strips/cubes(25%of sales volume),followed b

42、in 2023 before rebounding slightly to 4.4%in early 2024.This is calculated as a percentage of the overall sales volume for both plant-based meat and pre-packaged animal-based meat.2 On the basis of sales value,the market share of plant-based meat appears to be falling.However,this is a reflection of
43、 the shrinking price premium of plant-based meat relative to animal-based meat rather than a drop in sales performance.The steadier market share seen on a volume basis suggests that plant-based meat remains popular with a core group of consumers.It also suggests that the falling price premium of pla
44、nt-based meat has not significantly increased adoption possibly because the price per kg of plant-based meat rose between 2021 and 2023.2 Circana only gathers data on pre-packaged meat sales,so the market share is based on this figure rather than total meat sales.GFI EUROPE /Netherlands:Plant-Based
45、Foods Retail Market Report(2021-2023)15 Price trends relative to animal equivalent In 2021,plant-based meat was 63%more expensive per kg than animal-based meat,costing an average of 12.45 per kg compared to 7.66 per kg for animal-based meat.However,this price premium has decreased over time,falling
46、to just 35%in the period January to April 2024.The falling price premium has been caused by the price of animal-based meat rising faster than that of plant-based meat between 2021 and 2023,although both have dropped slightly between 2023 and early 2024.GFI EUROPE /Netherlands:Plant-Based Foods Retai
47、l Market Report(2021-2023)16 Plant-based milk and drinks Total market Between 2021 and 2023,the annual sales value of plant-based milk and drinks increased by 13%to 98 million.Over the same time period,unit sales remained roughly level,increasing by 1%to 53 million units,and sales volume also remain
48、ed roughly level,decreasing by 0.8%to 50 million litres.Unit and volume sales were at their highest in 2022.Between 2022 and 2023,unit sales fell by 1.4%,while sales volume fell by 2.3%.Sales value,however,grew by 8.2%.Partial year data for 2024 indicates that the average weekly sales value of plant
49、-based milk and drinks was 3.1%lower in the period 3 January to April 2024 than in the calendar year 2023,while unit and volume sales decreased by 1.4%and 1.5%,respectively.It is possible that sales have been negatively affected by the new tax introduced on 1 January 2024 on all plant-based milks ex
