14、Key,Advertiser Index346Contributors3498 9QS Yearbook 2025QS Yearbook 2025I write this immediately after an unusual instance in which both my country of birth,Australia,and my adopted country,Singapore,went to the polls to decide their gov-ernments on the same day.In a growing trend(that itself bucks
15、 the tendency of 2024),both incumbents prevailed,and it looks increasingly likely that each will also improve their mandates.Its an apt time to look back on the past year of international higher education.Much has changed,but,like the general election results in Australia and Singapore,a lot remains
16、 the same.Demand for global mobility,for high quality education,and for postgraduate em-ployment options,whether through a direct employer or as an entrepreneur,is as high as it was 12 months ago,if not higher.Students,for a variety of reasons,are looking abroad for their education.The ability and,f
17、rankly,desire of those destinations that have traditionally met students demands,however,is evolving and rapidly.Policy changes,both direct and indirect,have tamped down expectations of continue growth,and while students eyes turn overseas,exactly where they will find themselves is remains to be see
18、n.The point remains that it seems more likely than ever that a new landscape will emerge in the next 12-24 months,one where emerging destinations are no longer emerging,and established destinations are no longer established.For my part,I think parts of Asia,particularly China and Malaysia,as well as
19、 the Middle East will become much larger players in this space.If my prediction is correction,the change would have been somewhat pre-empted in the rankings.It was only a few years ago that Singapore was usurped by China for the top spot in the Asia rankings,while the Middle East continues to see st
20、rengthening metrics,if not always direct gains in positions.Outside of just the rankings,weve been covering the success and growing appetite for branch campuses in both regions in the monthly magazine.Of course,international education has been notoriously unpredictable.Theres every possibility that
21、Central Asia,Europe or Latin America become destination du jour.Its something,at least,to be mindful of and paying attention to.Last year,I had the honour of writing the foreword for Internationalization of Higher Education and Digital Transformation:Insights from Morocco and Beyond edited by a frie
22、nd and colleague,Dr Aicha Adoui.In that piece,I spoke about looking beyond the traditional study destinations of international education that had dominated the head-lines over the past decade,to discover the hidden work of other countries and destina-tions.Scratching just a little below the surface
23、reveals a rich vein of research,pedagogy and employability in ways that are novel,representative of the places they emerged from,and scalable elsewhere.I hope the 2025 QS Yearbook is a similar tome which you use as a base camp,scratching below its surface to discover more.As in past editions,weve in
24、cluded the simplified versions of most rankings produced by QS from June 2024 until April 2025.Included is the university or school name,their location and their overall rank.However,as you know,there is much,much more that goes into a ranking.By exploring online,or in past edition of QS Insights Ma
25、gazine,you can see further context,such as indicator positioning and performance(the highest ranked institution for employability isnt always the highest ranked for internationalisation),or regional positioning in both the Subject and World rankings.Weve also included a selection of articles from th
26、e past 12 months that provide further context as to what has happened.Rather unsurprisingly,Artificial Intelligence continues to be of interest to the sector,but the conversations have matured sub-stantially.No longer are we talking about the potential of AI,now the conversation has turned to implem
27、enting it best.Likewise,employability,student choice,recruitment,research outcomes and com-munity outreach remained common themes throughout the past year.How they are being discussed,however,has changed.Reflecting on the previous 12 months from an admittedly narrow frame of select-ed articles and s
28、implified rankings,there are a lot of similarities between the election results of both my birth and home countries.The conversations in international higher education are the same,but the contextual understanding,the thoughtfulness,the perseverance and the dedication have blossomed.While we continu

36、ACCREDITATIONS&RECOGNITIONS 14 15World University Rankings 2025World University Rankings 2025Reputation.Its a word that comes up time and time again when talking about universities.The definition can differ from person to person,from student to academic to employer.There is considerable overlap betw
37、een all three stakeholders and all will influence how a university is perceived by those wishing to study there,who wish to work there(or collaborate on research projects),or who are making hiring decisions.In the QS World University Rankings(WUR),reputation plays a huge role in how universities are
38、 assessed,with academic reputation and employer reputation used as key metrics.The academic reputation metric is the cornerstone of the ranking,making up 30 percent of a universitys final score,with employer reputation worth 15 percent of the score.That more indefinable metric,reputation among stude
39、nts both current and potential,is more subjective,as it depends a lot on brand identity,word-of-mouth,and other factors,such as how sustainable the university is perceived to be.Academic reputationBy far the most important metric in the WUR,academic reputation is generally what people first think of
40、 when considering the reputation of a university.The results of this ranking are based on a survey sent to thousands of academics across the world,with respondents selecting their top domestic universities demonstrating academic excel-lence in their faculty area,their top international institutions
41、in their faculty area,and their top institutions in their selected subject area.The academic reputation of a university is crucial for several reasons,influenc-ing the institutions overall success,the quality of its educational offerings,and its impact on students,faculty and society.The best schola
42、rs and researchers are drawn to universities with strong academic reputations,as these institutions provide a stimulating environment,ample research opportunities and better resources for professional growth.A strong academic reputation is also essential for the strategic planning,with highly ranked
43、 universities able to leverage this reputation into attracting investment from outside stakeholders,ensuring financial stability and growth.Academic reputation also drives more fruitful research collaborations and fund-ing.A mainstay in the top 10 of the WUR,the University of Oxford,receives the mos
44、t research funding in the UK,according to Research England figures,with last years top ranked global university,the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,receiving some of the highest federal research funding in the world.Universities with prestigious reputa-tions are more likely to form partnership
45、s with other top institutions worldwide,facili-tating student exchange programs,joint research and international collaborations.The location of a university also helps boost its academic(and,indeed,employer)reputation.Consider the fact that two of the consistently highest ranked universities in the
46、world,Harvard and MIT,are both based in Cambridge,Massachusetts,making the area a centre for innovation,similar to the California Bay Area,home to Silicon Valley,Talking About ReputationBy Julia Gilmore16 17World University Rankings 2025World University Rankings 2025Alumni networks are a vital resou
47、rce for universities hoping to boost their reputa-tion among potential and current students.Not only can alumni provide career devel-opment opportunities for students by offering internships,job placements and career advice,but they can also help recruit potential students by participating in outrea
48、ch programs,sharing their positive experiences,and highlighting the benefits of attending their former university.Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for students,with 41 percent of prospective students actively researching universities environmental sustainability strategy or efforts
49、before applying,according to the ISS.Consequently,last year QS introduced sustainability as a metric in the WUR,making up 5 percent of an insti-tutions final score.A study published in 2021 in The Lancet showed that around 45 percent of 1625-year-olds are suffering from climate anxiety,meaning its u
50、nderstandable that students would want to attend universities that are helping to assuage these fears.The sustainability metric used by QS in the WUR is based on the methodology used in the separate QS Sustainability Rankings,based both on the social impact and environmen-tal impact of the universit
51、y.Research shows that prospective international students prioritise a universitys sus-tainability efforts over its location when choosing where to apply,reflecting widespread climate anxiety among young people.Top institutions like the University of California,Berkeley and the University of Toronto
52、in Canada are integrating sustainability into their operations and academics,attracting students committed to a sustainable future.The higher education sector is crucial in addressing the climate emergency through research and education.The Royal Anniversary Trusts Platinum Jubilee Challenge in the
53、UK outlines strategies for universities to achieve net zero emissions,focusing on the built environment,travel,and supply chains.By embedding sustainability into their operations and research,universities can tackle climate challenges and attract like-minded students.At the same time,students explor
54、ing higher education options should be cautious about basing their decision solely on reputation.Its essential to choose a university that aligns with their personal,academic and career goals.Factors such as public versus private institutions,location,academic programs,size,extracurricular activitie
55、s and cost should all be considered.While a high university ranking or a renowned name can be appealing,the best education is found at a school that meets an individuals personal,educational and financial needs.This was first published in QS Insights Magazine 18,June 2024.with Berkeley and Stanford
56、on the doorstep.This helps facilitate not only inter-univer-sity collaboration but also strengthening links with employers.Employer reputationFor most,if not all,students,the primary motivation for undertaking a university degree is to stand out in a crowded job market.According to data from UNESCO,
57、around 254 million students are enrolled in universities globally,a number that has more than doubled in the last 20 years.With more qualified students entering the workforce than ever before,employers are looking for differentiating factors to determine the most qualified graduates,often favouring
58、those from institutions that they deem to have the best reputations.The employer reputation index in the WUR is assessed by an annual survey sent to thousands of global employers,who,similarly to the academic reputation ranking,nominate 10 domestic institutions they view as being the best for produc
59、ing relevant graduates,and 30 international institutions.University reputation is important to employers for a number of reasons.Its seen as a reliable indicator of a candidates capabilities,work ethic and preparedness for the workplace,with a well-regarded university assumed to maintain high academ
60、ic standards and rigorous selection processes,which can assure employers of the quality of education the candidate has received.Employers may also interpret the fact that a student has gained entry to a well-regarded university as proof of the candidates com-mitment to hard work and ambition,particu
61、larly in countries like the US where extracur-riculars are a key component of the admissions process.In addition,top universities are perceived by employers to keep their programmes aligned with the latest industry trends and technological advancements,ensuring that their graduates are well-versed i
62、n current practices and innovations.Well-regarded institutions often emphasise the development of soft skills such as communication,teamwork,leadership and time management,which are crucial for professional success.From a business perspective,the brand association of hiring graduates from prestigiou
63、s universities can enhance a companys image and credibility.It signals to clients,part-ners,and stakeholders that the company values high standards and employs top talent.A good reputation can also help universities leverage their connections with indus-try,such as internship opportunities and caree
64、rs fairs to help prepare students for the workplace.Employer reputation is a key factor for students.According to the 2023 QS International Student Survey,56 percent of respondents consider a high graduate em-ployment rate the most important factor when assessing a universitys teaching quality.Emplo
65、yability is also very important for what course a student chooses to study,with 51 percent of respondents in the survey saying that the most important factor in choosing their course is that it leads to their chosen career.Reputation among studentsOne of the biggest questions asked by potential stud
66、ents in higher education is:“Is university really worth it?”A 2023 Wall Street Journal/NORC study showed that 56 percent of respondents feel a degree isnt worth the financial outlay,with those aged 18-34 having the most concerns.With this in mind,it is more vital than ever that univer-sities ensure
67、their reputation is strong enough to attract students who may be having doubts about their university education.18 19World University Rankings 2025World University Rankings 20252Research Threshold For the QS World University Rankings,an institution should have at least 100 papers indexed by Scopus a
68、nd published over a 5-year window.Only papers of relevant paper types and after affiliation cap is applied are considered.3Small Size If an institution is of small size(fewer than 5,000 students),then we look at the performance in Academic Reputation,Employer Reputation and Citations per Faculty.Mor
69、e specifically,we need at least one of the following scenarios to be met for inclusion in the last few editions:to be in the top 1,000 for Academic Reputation,Employer Reputation and Citations per Faculty(all three performance lenses)to be in the top 900 in at least two of the above to be in the top

120、chnology.Now,in 2024,AI is being used regularly in many different industries and is continuing to grow.The global market for AI in education is expected to reach$6 billion by 2025.In higher education specifically,one of the ways it is used is in helping students decide where to study.Over a third of
121、 students surveyed in a recent QS report said that Generative AI has influenced their choice of course,university and career.When considering a study destination,applicants understandably have plenty of questions for students and faculty at their institution of interest.However,these ques-tions can
122、often go unanswered for a long time if asked outside of standard helpdesk hours.This is where AI chatbots come in.AI alone is not enough to attract the best candidatesAt the Open Institute of Technology(OPIT),an online institution which specialises in tech degrees,students undoubtedly prefer to inte
123、ract with real tutors and appreciate the opportunity to meet professors and classmates face-to-face,even in a virtual set-ting.But when it comes to student recruitment,Greta Maiocchi,Head of Marketing and Admissions,can certainly see the appeal of an AI chatbot.“AI chatbots can provide immediate ans
124、wers at any time of day or night,which can be very convenient for students with busy or irregular schedules,”she says.“They can efficiently handle routine inquiries and provide instant information,but they do not replace the depth that human interactions offer.”She raises the point that while AI cha
125、tbots can offer quick responses,they are limited by the data used to train them and might not fully address specific or nuanced queries.Besides,the empathy and personalised support provided by human interac-tions are crucial and cannot be easily replaced.“Human touch fosters a sense of belonging and
126、 support that is essential for a fulfill-ing educational experience,”she admits.A combination of AI chatbots and human interactions would therefore be the most effective approach for student recruitment,Maiocchi believes.This approach,she says,will maximise efficiency while maintaining the personal
127、touch that students value.Transparency is a key factor to consider,adds Maiocchi.Students should always be informed when they are interacting with an AI chatbot,ensuring that they know when to expect automated responses and when to seek more personalised assistance.“Recruitment offices can restructu

131、r human interaction,especially since AI(at least for now)is trained to emphasise the importance of forming a personal opinion by consulting real peo-ple,”explains Manteau.An AI chatbot can supplement this interaction by helping students find the neces-sary testimonials and resources,as well as guidi
132、ng them through the application steps.“For example,students particularly appreciate videos,which allow them to better envision and qualitatively understand the personalities of various schools.A chatbot can help identify which videos to watch,”he says.Chatbots can also provide valuable insights into
133、 candidate trends and preferences,enabling more targeted recruitment strategies,adds NEOMAs Alain Goudey,Associ-ate Dean for Digital.“This technology will create increased efficiency with customised answers and reduced response times,which should improve candidates satisfaction,”says Goudey.“However
134、,this technological shift necessitates adaptation and training for recruitment staff,as well as the integration of the tech with existing CRM and IT systems.”Goudey stresses the need for this data to be treated with conscientiousness and respect GDPR,which requires users are made aware of and consen
135、t to the who,what,when and why of collecting their data,and the AI Act,which stresses transpar-ency in the use of AI.Drawbacks that outweigh the benefitsContrastingly,some higher education institutions have made a conscious decision to avoid AI chatbots.When it comes to using AI in student recruitme
136、nt,Nyenrode Busi-ness University in the Netherlands believes there are currently more possible draw-backs than there are benefits.One of the major concerns the school has is the risk of errors and inaccura-cy,particularly if the AI chatbots are not carefully and punctiliously programmed and regularl
137、y updated.“Its important to provide precise and accurate information,so prospective students can make clear decisions about their future education,”says Anne-Marie Houten,Team Lead Programme Advisor for the Accountancy,Controlling Tax&Management Degree Programmes at Nyenrode Business University.Anot
138、her concern is the time and effort required to load and maintain a chatbot with the necessary information.Developing a chatbot that can accurately and effectively address the wide range of questions and concerns that prospective students may have is a substantial undertaking one that involves extens
139、ive data input,continuous moni-toring and regular updates to ensure the information remains up to date and relevant.For a business school like Nyenrode,which offers an extensive set of programmes,this task can be quite intensive.Each academic programme has its own unique set of information,requireme
140、nts and nuances that a generic chatbot might not handle well,explains Houten.“Creating specialised chatbots for each programme would involve a significant investment of time and resources,which is not feasible for us at this moment,”she says.“Lastly,since we are a private university and always stand
141、 for a personal approach School in France.Students are realising this and are already interacting with AI tools for their study choices,he says.This will only become more generalised.Derraz says that an academic institutions role will be to curate or build the right AI agents that are both academica
142、lly verified and tailored to the needs of its students.He agrees it should be clear when the AI agents are involved and when humans take the lead.“Schools will need to leverage their academic footprint,history and culture and blend it with AI tools to deliver more competitive advantages to their stu
143、dents,as in-ternational competition over the best candidates is heating up,”he says.“This will come both from the best human and AI student experience.”AI as the front-line serviceWhen faced with the prospect of a long wait from an admissions team,applicants may prefer to get their queries dealt wit
144、h immediately using AI-enhanced systems,suggests Amir Michael,Head of the Accounting Department and Professor of Accounting at the UKs Durham University Business School.“This is a possible option where AI acts as a first layer of service to deal with queries and then more complex cases can be escala
145、ted to an admission team mem-ber,”says Michael.“In this case,AI will be acting as a front-line service filter for que-ries,where only cases with some level of complexity will be dealt with by a human member of the team.”Using AI as a front-line service,he states,will improve efficiency and provide b
146、etter utilisation of technology as well as human time.“It is a digitalisation of the Q&A in order to deal with the volume of questions and queries in a timely manner.”He imagines that in the future,AI may also act as a marketing tool,similar to using AI-powered search engines and social media advert
147、s.This tool can be advanced to include universities,courses or programmes.Another way AI might soon be used is to generate predictive models that can forecast the types of questions applicants ask,providing reasonable answers to them.An advanced AI model could deal independently with some of these q
148、ueries with the flexibility to adjust the algorithmic model depending on the type,theme and patterns of data.“This will improve candidates satisfaction and enhance conversion rates,even though they know that a machine is responding to their queries,”states Michael.Sorting through masses of contentWh
149、en it comes to researching a school,a chatbot can complement traditional methods,helping students more easily find the information and resources they need to make an informed decision,explains Julien Manteau,Associate Dean for Communica-tion,Marketing and Development at NEOMA Business School in Fran
150、ce.Despite a chatbots abilities,it cannot replace an active approach on the part of the student.AI chatbots can be a useful tool for students who are overwhelmed with the pletho-ra of university or business school content available on their websites,brochures,social media and YouTube channels.Howeve
151、r,universities chatbots are not the only AI tool used by students when researching different institutions.Many students supplement their research by consulting ChatGPT,as it allows them to easily compare different schools,Manteau reveals.While this might be useful initially 28 World University Ranki
152、ngs 2025and attention,we do not believe that using AI chatbots for recruitment aligns with the image we strive to project or support.”The business school is not writing off AI chatbots completely,however.Houten reveals that Nyenrode may eventually use AI chatbots for specific scenar-ios,such as fair
153、s and events,where the focus is on one programme.“A chatbot could serve as a pilot or test case to handle short inquiries and provide basic information efficiently,”she says.This controlled setting will enable Nyenrode to assess the chatbots effectiveness and gather insights without compromising the
154、 overall quality of its recruitment efforts.Researching AI chatbotsSimilarly,the University of Sussex Business School is yet to implement AI chatbots in its recruitment strategy.However,the school is exploring how the technology can help alleviate pressures associated with the large volumes of appli
155、cations at certain times in the recruitment process.“I see chatbots playing a role in answering questions from potential applicants re-gardless of the time zone,and,for example,during clearing,”says Farai Jena,Associate Dean and Professor of Economics.Despite understanding their advantages,the issue
156、 is not a key focus currently.The UK school is instead using AI to enhance its teaching,learning,assessments and access to academic support resources.“We have a number of school-led initiatives in place to pilot AI initiatives.Were in the process of engaging with and training faculty to be more conv
157、ersant with AI tools and capabilities,”she says.Imperial College Business School is also currently investigating the best AI tools to improve the student recruitment experience.Instead of AI chatbots,the UK school is looking to develop a tool that will help to match participants to the best programm
158、es for their learning needs and goals.“This will include the use of predictive analytics to identify which candidates will be more likely to be accepted to which programme,”explains Jos Rosario,Director of Business Development for Open Programmes.“It would provide the additional layer of assurance f
159、or learners that they are enrolled on the best programme possible for their current learning and networking needs.”The AI payoffIts no longer a question of whether AI will impact student recruitment,but how.Currently,the schools that have implemented AI chatbots appear not to be replacing admissions
160、 staff,but instead are using the technology to automate routine questions and free up human time.This enables recruitment offices to focus on more com-plex queries,offering more support and in-depth responses,improving the overall applicant experience.However,from our conversations,students preferen

210、Butler explains to QS Insights Magazine,fittingly,over Zoom.Butler is the Programme Director of the online MBA at Vlerick Business School in Belgium,and has been running online courses for almost a decade now.In a sector that has changed beyond recognition in that time,he believes it is about to cha
211、nge shape once again.“I think were now in the middle of a second shift.”Zoom,Teams,synchronous,asynchronous,video conferencing theyre all words that ghosted rather than forced their way into our collective vocabulary after the COV-ID-19 pandemic.But our shared understanding of these terms is represe
212、ntative of the modern,more discerning online student.As schools around the world hurriedly shoved in-person courses online during the pandemic,many students experienced distance learning for the first time.Those early encounters have shaped their perceptions of it.“Because of the rapid growth of onl
213、ine education and some subpar experiences,you have participants that have consumed something online and it wasnt a fantastic experience,”says Butler.“So,theres a once-bitten,twice-shy attitude in terms of some of the exposure of these programmes.”Peter DeVries,CEO of the Canadian-based higher educat
214、ion management soft-ware Modern Campus,adds:“What the COVID pandemic should have taught higher education institutions is that programming alone-and the quality of faculty-isnt enough to truly meet the needs and expectations of modern learners.”Although some voices predicted that online learning woul
215、d become the post-COV-ID study format of choice,it hasnt quite worked out that way.According to figures from the US National Center for Education,in 2018/19 the proportion of students taking online courses was 35 percent.In 2021,that figure skyrocketed to 59 percent.But that proved to be its high wa
216、ter mark.It has since fallen year-on-year to 53 percent-below 2021s peak,yet still above pre-pandemic levels.Those figures are also reflected in student demand for MBA programmes.In 2020,a staggering 84 percent of business schools reported a growth in applications for on-line programmes.By 2022,that
217、 figure had fallen to just 19 percent.Clearly those lockdown-fuelled levels of interest were never going to be sustained.But as demand starts to level off,distance learning looks to be entering its next phase.Because although interest in the format is higher than pre-pandemic levels,questions around
218、 its credibility continue to linger.One global survey from this year found that 44 percent of online students still think an in-person course is more valuable.Another study revealed that the majority of employers believe in-person courses provide em-ployees with better technical,leadership and commu
219、nication skills.Just 54 percent of those employers valued online and in-person programmes equally.So how can schools overcome these preconceptions?Sandra Affenito is the chief academic officer and provost of Post University in the US,which has been offering on-line courses since 1996.Affenito believ

223、 future as one with a greater dis-tinction between the different types of online programmes.In the same way that you could choose between full-time or part-time degrees,he says you should also be able to choose between different types of online degree:asynchronous or synchronous,high touch or low to
224、uch.That greater level of personalisation could bring better value for money for students.So what now for online learning?While its unlikely to hit the heights of the COVID era again,programmes are continuing to improve at a rapid rate:better planned,better delivered,more affordable.Its the only opt
225、ion if schools want to satisfy the demands of the modern student-one who knows their asynchronous from their synchronous.“Your average student nowadays will let you know if they think your online practices are not good enough,”says Butler.“I think theres really going to be a backlash from online stu

228、vironment,”he says.Does he feel he missed out on the in-person experience?“Yeah,kind of.You get to make meaningful connections with others only when you meet them in person.Apart from that,there is no difference academically.”A graduate of the online MBA at Florida Gulf State University,who asks to
229、remain anonymous,agrees.“My current job came through my personal network-I wouldnt have been approached if I didnt have an MBA.No-one has ever asked or inquired if it was online or not.”For Charles Reid,the value of online study has never been in question.Hes cur-rently pursuing his second online de
230、gree:this time,an MBA from Boston University after previously earning a Masters in Communication.Studying online has meant he has been able to learn without putting his career on hold.“My first one got me a seat at the executive table at my previous company and more than paid for itself,”he reflects
231、.“The one Im currently earning is plugging in some knowledge gaps about business in general,but Id say its worth it so far.Great instructors and program and I dont have to move away from the San Francisco Bay Area,where Ive built my career.”Yet theres no question that the format still has its limita
232、tions.Thats certainly what Ron Duerksen has come to realise.Hes the Global Executive Director of the Interna-tional Masters Program for Managers(IMPM)at Canadas McGill University,one of the many institutions forced to move teaching online during the pandemic.He has since decided to offer affected st
233、udents the chance to retake the IMPM in-person.“While an online senior leadership program can work well,there are some things which are more difficult to replicate online,”he admits.“Given that Cycle 23 partici-pants did not have the chance to visit three countries and three of our academic part-ner
234、s,we agreed to let them attend the current modules in person at no cost.Several participants have taken advantage of this and really enjoyed meeting a new set of participants and immersed themselves into the in-person experience they missed.“Company visits and interactions and discussions after clas
235、s with the professor and fellow participants is also hard to recreate online,”he continues.“And in-person is much better to experience the local culture and business environment first-hand.”Joe Gollner was one of those affected students at McGill.While he acknowledg-es the unique elements of in-pers
236、on learning,he believes a combination of the two is always going to come out on top.“Its not an either/or scenario when we are thinking about online and in-person it is both/and.The intentional blending of online and in-person experience wins hands-down.”Rather than a future where we have to choose
237、between online and in-person,it seems much more likely that barriers between the two will continue to blur.Many in-person degrees already feature some form of distance learning within the curricu-lum,while interest in hybrid programmes-a combination of online and in-person study-is outpacing that of

292、ered mass rethink-ing around knowledge work from software engineering to legal research to copy-writing.But perhaps most quietly transformative has been the effect on professional learning:a global surge in demand for AI literacy,and the rapid expansion of short-form,stackable educational offerings
293、promising exactly that.The result is a market undergoing swift reinvention.Alongside the conventional degree,learners are flocking to what could be called“credential capital”:a new class of bite-sized,rsum-enhancing certificates that sit at the intersection of executive education and continuing prof
294、essional development.A new kind of learnerAccording to data from online learning platform Coursera,enrolments in generative AI courses rose by an extraordinary 1,060 percent last year.The uptick was especial-ly pronounced in Latin America and the Caribbean,where participation climbed 882 percent ove
295、r the same period underscoring a broad and intensifying demand for AI education worldwide.At rival platform edX,which partners with institutions such as MIT and the Uni-versity of Oxford,executive education programmes in AI-related courses recorded a staggering 424 percent increase in 2023,attractin
296、g more than 14,000 participants in 12 months.The figures point to intensifying demand for AI fluency,particularly among mid-career professionals.But the most striking change is not volume it is profile.These are not traditional students.A growing number of these students are working professionals,ag
297、ed 30 to 55,already employed in mid-to senior-level roles.They include product managers seeking to integrate machine learning into roadmaps,HR leaders hoping to automate performance reviews,and general managers asked to optimise costs using AI but often without any prior training.“It is not just the

306、oof point of expertise,offering flexibility for busy professionals and clarity for employers.The appeal stands in sharp contrast to more traditional pathways,which have come under increasing scrutiny.In a pointed critique in FT,Euan Blair,founder of UK-based training platform Multiverse,:“The challe
307、nge of higher education and even traditional corporate learning is there is a complete lack of direction or consequences.The meas-ure of success of colleges is not successful careers for their students.”Still,many in higher education argue that universities provide more than just career training the

309、 a credential are now prominently displayed on social media profiles,CVs and job applications.For recruiters and employers,they offer a real-time snapshot of an individuals evolving skillset.For learners,they offer a way to move forward in their careers without stepping away from work.This flexibili
310、ty is helping to reshape how professional success is credentialed.In a 2023 survey by Coursera,63 percent of employers said an industry micro-credential would favourably influence their decision when evaluating candidates with otherwise similar academic backgrounds.Institutional realignmentThe rise
311、of credential-based education is not only driven by learner demand.It also reflects changing incentives among universities themselves,some of which face stag-nating degree programme applications,growing pressure to diversify revenue and a crowded global education market.Between 2010 and 2022,US coll
312、ege enrolment fell nearly 15 percent,from 18.1 million to 15.4 million students.Driven by a shrinking demographic,rising tuition costs and growing scepticism about the value of a traditional degree,the decline has pushed some institutions to cut budgets,close campuses or pivot toward non-degree,job-
313、fo-cused credentials gradually reshaping the role of higher education.Business schools,especially,have moved quickly to expand their executive and non-degree offerings once peripheral,now central to strategy.Yet demand for the full-time MBA has held up better than expected,reflecting a broader reali
314、ty:traditional degrees still hold ground in fields requiring formal accreditation,such as law,medicine and education,or where employers value theoretical depth and established networks,as in engineering,academia and the sciences.For many,the degree remains both a gateway and a signal of long-term in
315、tent.The network dividendBut the value of modern programmes increasingly extends beyond the curriculum.One of their lesser-discussed strengths is the network effect:rather than moving through a fixed cohort,participants rotate through modules alongside new peers often from entirely different sectors
316、,functions or geographies.The result is a broader,more dynamic professional network.Over time,this creates an ever-expanding matrix of“weak ties”the kind social scientists have long identified as a key driver of unexpected opportunity.“When we look at the experimental data,weak ties are better,on av
