9、re the mots dordre with the big semiconductor vendors present at this years embedded world.From Secure Elements(SEs)to Trusted Platform Modules(TPM),the focus was on verifying credentials and ensuring the authenticity of origin,whether for Identity(ID),communications,or updates.High-end TPMs continu

10、e to be in demand for computing,industrial,and network infrastructure markets,such as for applications in utilities(industrial gateways).Moreover,the TPM success story is now gathering momentum across a growing number of other target markets,including smart mobility,health,lifestyle,and renewable en

11、ergy.Infineon presented on the usability of TPMs for enhanced security for these markets.Its OPTIGA SLB 9673(TPM 2.0)is its flagship product in the space and will take Internet of Things(IoT)security to the next level.The availability of both Serial Peripheral Interface(SPI)-and Inter-Integrated Cir

12、cuit(I2C)-enabled solutions means that the TPM is suited to the wide range of processors typically used in the IoT space.In addition,this product is designed with the future in mind,leveraging hash-based Post-Quantum Cryptography(PQC)algorithms(eXtended Merkle Signature Scheme(XMSS)signatures)for it

13、s firmware update mechanism,marking an important milestone in the push toward PQC.Authentication capabilities for the broader IoT was another popular showcase,with various product announcements and solutions being demoed for a variety of use cases,including accessories and disposables in consumer,me

14、dical,industrial,and automotive sectors.Microchip launched six secure authentication Integrated Circuit(IC)solution products in its CryptoAuthentication product line(ECC204,ECC206,SHA104,SHA105,SHA106)and its CryptoAutomotive IC family(TA010).Supported by its Trust Platform Design Suite,the authenti

15、cation ICs provide different levels of security performance suitable for a range of devices of varying capabilitiesfrom low-end Microcontroller Units(MCUs)to more powerful Microprocessor Units(MPUs).Customers can order as few as 2,000 units(the minimum order quantity)and use Microchips secure provis

16、ioning services to safely inject customer-owned secrets.NXP presented a new EdgeLock SE(SE051H)specifically with extended support for the Matter standard,with built-in provisioning(device attestation certificate and passcode verifier)and authentication methods,including a Near Field Communication(NF

17、C)interface and Type-4 tag capability to simplify device commissioning and configuration on the consumer side.STMicro showcased new root of trust technologies with the recently launched STM32H5 MCU(Arm Cortex-M33 based),including both an immutable(set at factory)and an updatable one(for developers).

18、It also demoed a new Secure Manager(the STM32TrusTEE Secure Manager),leveraging Arm TrustZone,alongside ProveRuns ProvenCore-M Trusted Execution Environment(TEE)Operating System(OS)for isolation.With multi-tenancy capabilities,it allows developers to update separate isolated applications(and their c

19、ontained Ips)without affecting the overall security posture of the device,which is targeting Platform Security Architecture(PSA)Certified and Security Evaluation Standard for IoT Platforms(SESIP)Level 3 Certification.In addition,the Secure Manager can work with Kudelskis IoT keySTREAM root of trust

20、solution for remote credential lifecycle 4It was all about the trust anchor at embedded world this year.From Physically Unclonable Functions(PUFs)to SEs,the talk was all about creating a root of trust at the hardware level and the ability to manage that trust throughout that hardwares lifecycle.PUF

21、technology is finding itself in the limelight again.While the technology has been around for quite some time,there seems to be a renewed dynamic in PUF as a cost-effective and simple method of creating root keys and unique IDs,something increasingly in demand for IoT devices.Part of this is driven b

22、y concern around anti-cloning and anti-piracy,but a growing impetus is tied into lifecycle management of IoT devicesand the ability to securely communicate with,connect to,track,and manage the device when in the field.Innovation focus has shifted to how PUF technology can be made not only more resis

23、tant to environmental variations and degradation over time,but also how to leverage it in other applications beyond just offering a unique ID,such as using it in Random Number Generators(RNGs),for example.Intrinsic ID presented its Zign family of solutions for PUF,which are the only software-based P

24、UF solutions in the market.The family consists of Zign Tag which is able to identify devices in the field through an SRAM-based PUF technology and Zign RNG which is capable of using the noise from reading the SRAM as entropy for a true seed RNG(and one able to meet NIST SP800-90A recommendations).Fl

25、agship products of the family are the Zign X00 solutions which are packaged in varying levels of offerings:from Zign 100(with only an SRAM PUF for deriving keys and random numbers),to Zign 200 which includes a crypto-library(symmetric only),to Zign 300,with symmetric and asymmetric crypto library,a

26、fully integrated embed TLS and secure cloud communication capabilities.French outfit Secure-IC also offers PUF IP technology out of the box,without the need for an enrollment phase(and compatible with automotives Automotive Safety Integrity Level(ASIL)B to D requirements),as part of its Securyzr ran

27、ge of solutions for embedded devices,and its integrated Security Services Platform(iSSP),which it was showcasing at the conference.Its IP solutions include PQC libraries,as well as anti-tamper IP.These can be leveraged by the Securyzr integrated Secure Element(iSE)root of trust solutions for secure

28、boot,isolated processing,assets and lifecycle management,and,in turn,its Securyzr Server for device ID,provisioning,updates,monitoring,etc.The Secure-IC offering is compliant at the pre-silicon level with major certification schemes(Common Criteria(CC),NIST Federal Information Processing Standards(F

29、IPS)140-3,IEC 62443 and the Office of the State Commercial Cryptography Administration(OSCCA).The iSE is available off-the-shelf as a“pure Register Transfer Level(RTL)”delivery,allowing for a seamless integration in Electronic Design Automation(EDA)flows and easing adoption in various silicon nodes.

30、Crypto Quantique was another exhibitor that is in the unique ID space;with a derivative PUF-type technology offering,Quantum-Driven Identity(QDID),that leverages atomic variability in silicon at the quantum level to generate a unique ID.Crypto Quantique also offers the QuarkLink software platform so

31、lution(which is best used with QDID,but can also be used with other roots of trust)that connects IoT devices to applications hosted remotely,including in the cloud,and can facilitate provisioning,onboarding,and management of keys and certificates.Both Intrinsic ID and Crypto Quantiques solutions for

32、m part of the root of trust of a semiconductor device.They have the advantage of not requiring cryptographic key injection or secure storage in non-volatile memory for the cryptographic key material.Once the devices are powered down,the key ceases to be,however,it can be regenerated at any time once

33、 the device is powered on.The fact that cryptographic keys are not stored in physical memory provides additional guarantees against cloning and copying.Security IP Michela M5Security IP Lifecycle management tied to the root of trust was another hot topic.It was interesting to see the growing interes

34、t in lifecycle management of credentials(certificates,keys,etc.),from creating a root of trust and its role in enabling not just the provisioning and onboarding aspect of devices,but their eventual management once in the field.Many of the security IP solutions showcased made a point of stressing the

35、se capabilities;unique IDs being just a start,offering that anchor for certificate and key management.Kudelski IoT presented its keySTREAM IoT device security management system that can be used together with its security IP product portfolio.KeySTREAM provides personalization of chips in production,

36、provisioning in the field and credential management,as well as expanding to include other security challenges,such as testing,threat,and risk assessments.The advantage here is that they can develop those services with a deep focus on the silicon.TEEs were also on show,especially for the IoT edge.Man

37、y of the semiconductors demoing AI-based capabilities were leveraging Arm TrustZone technology,a stalwart in the TEE space for more than a decade.Some really interesting applications of the technology have been possible with innovation on the IP side of things,notably around containerization and mic

38、ro-services.Companies like ZAYA are offering a secure OS that can create multiple separate micro-containers,each meeting PSA Certified Level 1 and SESIP certification;the idea being that developers need only update the application contained within the micro-container when needed,rather than the enti

39、re device firmware and OS.The containerization technology is available even for Memory Management Unit(MMU)-less microcontrollers,which ZAYA calls Microcontainers.These are platform-agnostic independent environments that allow individual deployments of the containers.Independent container deployment

40、 also resolves individual Machine Learning(ML)model upgrade limitations for MCUs.ZAYA can provide this containerization technology for both secure and non-secure worlds on TrustZone.This is key in enabling separate update processes for the various applications,without affecting the overall security

41、posture of the device.Additionally,the company provides Microservices,including turnkey,plug-and-play(no coding,no build,etc.),cloud,ML,and security services,and is planning to create an app store to download the various microservices in a bid to accelerate its go-to-market.Arm has been working hard

42、 to ensure interoperability and integration within the fragmented IoT ecosystem.One of its key demos at the conference was for its SystemReady certification program,which allows alignment on a base system architecture.The security interface extension of the program enables compliance with the Arm Ba

43、se Boot Security Requirements,which include UEFI secure boot,secure firmware updated,and TPM interfaces.These can then be used to certify with the Arm co-founded PSA Certified program.SystemReady devices facilitate application development across platforms,providing developers with ease of use throug

44、h a standardized base system architecture,regardless of processor or OS type.While this write-up represents only some of the security solutions showcased at the conference,many more were on display.What is clear is that security is much more in demand in this space,driven by both standard developmen

45、t and regulation,and the market is responding not only with a rich variety of high-performing solutions,but ones that seek to decomplexify implementation and usage for manufacturers and developers,at a broad range of cost-sensitive price points.Michela MentingAI Democratization Continues to Be the M

46、ain Priority at embedded world 2023Malik Saadiembedded world 2023 witnessed a concerted effort from AI hardware and software vendors to pursue wide AI adoption.While it is clear to all exhibitors that recent hype on generative AI has zero connection to their core business,they greatly welcomed the p

47、ublic eagerness to embrace AI applications in their daily lives.Many believed this would open up more doors for product and solution showcases,demonstrations,acceptance,and eventual deployments.A significant component of AI democratization is easy-to-use AI development software.Key players,such as E

48、dge Impulse,SensiML,Imagimob,and Aizip,continue to enhance their software tools and libraries to assist AI development and deployment.Edge Impulse even launched integrated sensor and AI software solutions targeting healthcare,industrial,and manufacturing sectors to reduce barriers to adoption.The im

49、portance of AI development software did not go unnoticed by edge AI chipset vendors.NXP and Lattice Semiconductor continued improving their AI development software and optimizing it for their respective AI chipsets.STMicroelectronics goes even further by acquiring Cartesiam,a zero/low-code AI softwa

50、re startup.The software solution,NanoEdgeAIStudio,allows developers to create ML applications based on anomaly detection,outlier detection,classification,and regression,without advanced AI skills.More importantly,STMicroelectronics has partnered with NVIDIA to enable seamless conversion of models be

51、tween the AI development software toolkit from both companies.Announced only during NVIDIAs GTC Spring 2023,which happened right after the show,developers can now convert AI models developed for Graphics Processing Units(GPUs)to run on low-power edge AI chipsets from STMicroelectronics.Such a partne

52、rship is a first in the industry from two vendors previously focused on building a hardware-exclusive AI software stack.To enable such conversion,NVIDIA opens its TAO Toolkit to support ONNX-based quantized AI models,while STMicroelectronics opens up STM32Cube.AI for the trained neural networks.As a

53、 result,developers can now create a runtime in fewer steps,in less time,and at a minimal cost.Another key trend during embedded world was the rise of heterogeneous hardware for edge AI.For example,NXP and STMicroelectronics are introducing their AI accelerator Intellectual property into most microco

54、ntrollers.This allows for more efficient AI computing,while keeping the core Central Processing Unit(CPU)focusing on general-purpose tasks.In addition,other edge AI chipset vendors continue forming partnerships to offer heterogeneous solutions,such as Renesas partnerships with Syntiant and SiFive.AB

55、I Research believes that industrial collaboration will play an increasingly important role in enabling AI democratization,especially as AI models continue to become more complex and must be supported by heterogeneous computing architecture.A development that is not exclusive to AI,but that will sign

56、ificantly impact the edge AI industry is the proliferation of RISC-V.Companies that were present at the event,such as GreenWaves Technologies,MIPS,Imagination,and SiFive,have launched various RISC-V chipsets for general-purpose computing and AI acceleration.Coupled with the geopolitical tension betw

57、een the United States and China,and the uncertainty between Qualcomm and Arm,the market is more open to embracing RISC-V as an alternative to x86 and Arm-based instruction set 5Precise Indoor Location EverywhereMark QiIndoor positioning and ranging had a large presence at embedded world 2023,led by

58、advancements in Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE)and Angle of Arrival(AoA)gaining attention,alongside vendors looking toward future Bluetooth standards and High Accuracy Distance Measurement(HADM).At the same time,there was a growing presence of Ultra-Wideband(UWB)for a wide range of Real-Time Location Syst

59、em(RTLS)and secure entry applications.The Bluetooth 5.1 standard,released in 2019,highlighted Bluetooth AoA as one its marquee features.The promise of standardization of a solution previously only available from a select few vendors,such as Quuppa,created room to grow for the location ecosystem and

60、for a wide range of interoperable AoA solutions to emerge.Compared to older Received Signal Strength Indicator(RSSI)BLE positioning,AoA promises much higher accuracy(normally within 50 Centimeters(cm)compared to 1 Meter(m)to 3 m for RSSI),while maintaining many of the key advantages BLE has as posit

61、ioning technology,such as low power consumption and chipset costs.Since standardization in 2019,BLE AoA solutions have begun to emerge.CoreHW was also present at embedded world,demonstrating its BLE AoA-based positioning hardware and IP portfolio.Partner onsemi also had AoA on display,leveraging its

62、 own AoA-capable RSL15 Bluetooth microcontroller to show an asset tracking application for retail.Energy harvesting specialist e-peas also demonstrated an AoA asset tracking solution,leveraging Quuppas technology alongside hardware form tatwah and Nichicon,highlighting the effectiveness of energy ha

63、rvesting for RLTS tags in order to reduce power consumption.u-blox had its XPLR BLE AoA development kit on display,which was also leveraged by partner Nordic Semiconductor,which has combined the technology with its own HADM-like ranging IP to provide both angular and range-based positioning.Startup

64、Metirionic had a similar approach,announcing at embedded world that its new Metirionic Advanced Ranging Stack(MARS 2.0)would be moving to Bluetooth,citing the broad device ecosystem in the IoT and the ubiquity of the standard as key differentiators.MARS 2.0 uses AoA and high accuracy ranging based o

65、n channel sounding to accurately position targets.While HADM has not made it to the Bluetooth specification yet,upcoming chipset and software support is aiming to capitalize early and preempt standardized offerings.Combining AoA and HADM will allow vendors to supply RTLS and indoor positioning solut

66、ions with more capable,but less costly infrastructure.A single AoA+HADM anchor can enable positioning at a similar level of accuracy as multiple AoA-only anchors performing trilateration,which could be a major advancement given the prohibitive cost of installing and maintaining infrastructure as a m

67、ajor barrier to RTLS adoption.The technology is still yet to be widely available,so questions remain about how the technology performs both in terms of cost effectiveness and in terms of real-world efficiency within RTLS applications in key verticals where BLE will take hold,such as logistics or hea

68、lthcare tracking.With the somewhat slow pace of AoA development and support for HADM coming to the Bluetooth standard within the next few years,we should expect AoA+HADM solutions to take a couple more years to arrive en masse.UWB also featured heavily,with focus on the growing supplier and vendor e

69、cosystems for RTLS alongside other applications for UWB,such as ranging in automotive and consumer 7UWB for High-Precision Ranging and PositioningAndrew ZignaniThe potential of UWB for high-precision ranging and positioning was a key driver for many of the UWB vendors at embedded world.With historic

70、ally limited competition in the UWB chipset and module space,Qorvo was able to show off its wide partner portfolio of RTLS Original Equipment Manufacturers(OEMs)and solutions providers.However,the space is opening up,with NXPs UWB solutions also on show and able to achieve similar performance.Outsid

71、e of pure RTLS,Qorvo also demonstrated UWB for indoor positioning for smartphones and UWB anchors in partnership with Pinpoint and Accuras,joining a growing trend of leveraging UWB in consumer devices for secure communications and precise distance measurement.Murata had UWB positioning in place for

72、multiple applications.For RTLS,Muratas Type 2AB modules combined precise positioning using UWB from Qorvo and improved power management and communications using BLE from Nordic to maximize battery life for RTLS tracking applications.Murata also leveraged NXPs FiRa-compatible UWB chipsets,targeting s
