、in Japan04A look to the futureTable of contentsThe Japanese energy market01.Since the tsunami in 2011 caused most of the nuclear power plants in Japan to have to be shut down, the country has been heavily reliant on liquefied natural gas(LNG)to meet its energy needs.Japan is the worlds second-largest
、 importer of LNG,behind only China, and primarily uses it as fuel for thermal power plants.Fossil fuels accounted for roughly 72.4%of power generation in 2022,with LNG contributing 29.9%,a drop from the previous year.Coal usage, however, increased from 26.5%in 2021 to 27.8%in 2022.The Japanese energy m
、arketJapan has been slowly moving away from nuclear power since the turn of the century. In 2000,nuclear power supplied 29%of the countrys energy demand, but that number dropped to just 6%in 2022 and continued to fall throughout the year. The Japanese energy marketThe country has plans in place to phas

、has the potential to cause instability in the grid.In May 2022,Japan committed, along with the other G7 countries,to work towards removing coal-fuelled sources from its power supply by 2035.To this end,Japan has been making a significant push into renewable energy sources. The Japanese energy marketAs
、 an island nation,Japan has huge potential to leverage offshore wind generation. However, development in this area has only just begun, with the first project of 1.7 GW awarded at the end of 2021.The country has been investing in onshore wind projects for longer and,as of the end of 2022,has roughly 4.
、5 GW of wind capacity installed.Hydropower and biomass generation are also used in Japan, contributing 7.1%and 4.6%to the energy mix in 2022.The country also introduced a feed-in tariff(FIT)system in 2021 to help support renewable technologies and move away from fossil fuels. The Japanese energy marke
、tThe Japanese solar market02.When it comes to solar photovoltaic(PV)generation,Japan is currently excelling. As of the end of 2022,Japan had an installed capacity of 78.8 GW of solar PV.This accounted for 9.9%of the energy mix,up from 9.3%the year prior. This is an impressive installed capacity for a
