9、xtraordinaryyear.InJuly,ourvolunteersrescuedaCaliforniasealionnearthefamousSantaCruzBeachBoardwalk.Thatsealion,whocametobeknownasMilestone,hadbeenbehavinglistlessly,allowingpeopletocometooclose.Onsite,ourveterinariansquicklyconfirmedadiagnosisofleptospirosis(abacterialinfectionthatcausesdamagetothek

10、idneys).Milestonewasquiteill,butwithantibioticsandthegreatcareoftheCentersteam,herecovered,andeventuallyreturnedtotheocean.Whatsetthissealionapartwasnothismalady(sadly,weseemanypatientsafflictedwiththisdisease)butthathewasthe Centers 10,000th sea lion patientsincewebeganoperationsin1975!Everyoneofou

11、rpatientsisimportanttous;manysufferfrominfectionsjustasMilestonedid,manyotherssufferfromocean-bornetoxins,somefromcancer,andstillothersarefoundentangledinmarinedebris.Milestonesarrivalatthehospitalgaveustheopportunitytopauseandreflectontheextraordinarynumberofanimalswhoseliveswevesaved,andinturn,the

12、magicalimpacttheyhavehadoneachofus.Manymonthshavepassedsincewefirstheardaprofessionalpercussionist“play”theplasticandglassbottleseastarintheCentercourtyard,andsincewesharedapodiumwiththeever-charismaticHenry,thebigplasticfish.Duringthesummerandfallof20II,ourSausalitofacilitywasvirtuallyawashinplasti

13、ctrashthatwastransformedintomagnificentseacreaturesaspartofWashed Ashore:Plastics,Sea Life and Art.Ondisplaywererepresentationsofwhalebones,acoralreef,andevenaturtleallmadefrommulti-coloredplasticcollectedfrombeaches.Thisexhibittookthedevastatingproblemofmarinedebrisandmadeitpoignantlyevidenttotens-

14、of-thousandsofpeople.We,andourguests,areallnowbetterinformed,andwerecertainlymoremotivatedtohelpaddressthisglobalissue.TheresnotanotherlocationwherethisartwoulddisplaywithsuchresonanceasTheMarineMammalCenter,againstthebackdropofourmarinemammalpatients.InApril,theCentersseniorscientist,Dr.Frances Gul

15、land,wassworninasacommissionerofthethree-personU.S.MarineMammalCommission.Thiswasaremarkableoccasion,andofferedagreatopportunityforustorecognizetheaccomplishmentsofDr.Gulland;fortheCenter,forthefieldofmarinemammalscience,andforthepatientswetreat.Inthisnewrole,Dr.Gullandiswell-positionedtoinfluencean

16、dguidetheoversightofournationscareformarinemammalsandtheirhabitats.Thiswas,indeed,anextraordinaryappointment,befittinganextraordinaryindividual.Countlessothermilestonesandaccomplishments,largeandsmall,wereapartof20II,andweinviteyoutoreadabouttheminthisreport.Whileourpatientsareourfocus,ourimpactisma

26、mmals.Helping Animals in the Wild Using New TechniquesEveryyear,thousandsofmarinemammalsbecomeentangledinordiefromoceantrash.OnNovember10,alarge700lb.elephantsealwasspottedatPiedrasBlancasnearSanSimeon,CAwithagreenpackingstrapwrappedtightlyaroundhisneck.Manyentangledanimalsareinitiallystrongenoughto

27、escaperescueattemptsandbecausetheycontinuetogrow,theirentanglementsbecomeeventighter.GreenTiewasrescuedthankstotheCenterseffortstotrysomethingnotdonebeforesedatingalargeandverymobileelephantsealinthewild.Oncethesedativetookeffect,theteamcutawayGreenTiesentanglementandcleanedthewound.Hewentbacktotheo

28、ceanthatsameday.In2011,werescued14marinemammalswithentanglementslikeGreenTiesandthroughthosestorieswereabletoremindthepublictokeeptheoceansfreeoftrash.Asahappysidenote,aweekafterGreenTiewasfreed,hewasspottedonanotherbeachwithotherelephantsealsdoingwhattheydobestlounging!LikeGreenTie,thiselephantseal

38、liforniasealionsinneedofhelpasaresultofmultipleailments.Eachpatientgivesusanopportunitytolearnmoreaboutmarinemammalhealthandtodevelopnewclinicaltechniquestohelpthem.SuchwasthecaseforayearlingsealionwecalledJetty,whowasfoundwithadangerousentanglementwrappedaroundherneck!Thankstoamemberofthepublicwhoo

39、fferedupakayak,ourrescuerswereabletofloatuptothesealionandperformarescue.Atourhospital,theentanglementwasremovedandJettyreceivedantibiotics.Shealsohadanothercondition,leptospirosis,abacterialinfectionthatcandamagethekidneys.In2011,ourveterinarianstreated186casesofthisdiseaseahugespikecomparedtothe37

40、casesinthepreviousyear.StudyingpatientslikeJettyalsogivesresearchers,suchasUCLApost-doctoralresearcherDr.KatiePrager,arareopportunitytofurtherourknowledgeofthisincreasinglyprevalentdisease.In2011,Dr.Pragerworkedalongsideourveterinarianstoinvestigatehowleptospiresareshedandtransmittedinwildsealions.W

41、hileJettywassuccessfullytreatedforherinfectionandreleasedbackintothewild,whatmakesherstorysointerestingisthemanyopportunitiessheprovidednotonlytohelpothermarinemammalsinthefuture,butalsotoeducatepeopleattheCenter.Severalveterinarystudents,whowouldnototherwisehavehadthechancetolearnfirst-handaboutthe

42、anatomyandphysiologyofsealions,participatedinherinitialexamination,anesthesiaprocedure(necessaryinthiscasetoquicklyandpainlesslyremovetheentanglement),andfollow-upwoundcare.Jettysrecuperationperiodalsoprovideduswithyetanotherlearningopportunity:tohelpevaluateanewde-wormingmedicationnormallyusedforho

55、ermealsdownandevenafterweeksonsite,shejustcouldntgainweight.Theveterinaryteaminvestigatedfurtherandlearnedthatthesealhadanabdominalabnormalityaslidinghiatalhernia.Asinhumans,aherniaoccurswhenabodypartpushesintoanareawhereitdoesntbelong;inthiscase,thestomachhadslidintoWildoctricschestcavitythroughano

56、pening(hiatus)inherdiaphragm.Similartohumanpatientswiththiscondition,Wildoctricunderwentaprocedurecalledlaparoscopicgastropexy.Hoursafterourveterinarianscompletedthesurgery,shewasbackinherpenwithawholenewzestforeatingfishagain!Shestayedwithusforanother20days,gaining44lbsbeforeshewasreleasedbackintot

58、hilesomeschoolscanvisittheCenter,manyotherscannotaffordthetravelcosts,sotheWhaleBusoutreachvancomestotheirrescue!Teacherslovethesevenuniqueprogramsthattravelinavanpackedwithinteresting,hands-onitemslikewhalebaleen,spermwhaleteeth,sealionfurandfunactivitiesthataretaughtbyoureducators.In2011,welaunche

59、danewprogramcalledOcean Ambassadors,whichteachesstudentshowtrashtravelsthroughwatershedstotheoceanandprovidesthemwithspecificideasforreducingtheirtrashfootprint.Thisnewprogramhasbeenwellreceivedbystudentsandteachers.AmeriCorps InternsSince2009,theCenterseducationteamhasbenefitedfromtheenergyandenthu

60、siasmofAmeriCorpsinterns.In2011,throughapartnershipwithConservationCorpsNorthBay,threeinternsjoinedusbetweenOctoberandAugust.Duringtheyear,theytaught38%ofallourschoolprogramsandtoursandofthat,taught70%ofourWhaleBusprograms.New Vet Detectives Experience Makes Marine Science Fun Wecontinuetofindwaysto
